LADY OF THE YEAR—The Alpha Tau Delta service sorority recognized Julia Cordona as their Lady of the Year for 2022. “Each year we recognize a lady from the community who epitomizes a servant’s heart and core values of giving back to the community,” said Brooksy Fisher, publicity chair. Cordona is in charge of the local Workforce Commission office here in Rockdale for Milam County where she serves those in need of employment and training needs in order to make a living to support themselves and their families. During the pandemic, she and her staff worked with over 2,000 affected individuals and helped to train and assist in locating funding, opportunities and new employment. They had to figure out new ways to work with everyone when businesses shut down. Pictured are (front row, L-R) Brooksy Fisher, Jenah Campsey, Haley Leopold, Cardona, Felicia Alexander, Jamie Retchloff, Lindsey Lillard; (back row, L-R) Kaybee Nelson, Nacole Musto, Kristen Zapata, Macy Montalvo, Ashley Willard and Julie Masek.
RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION—Stiles Patin, a 16-year-old sophomore at Thorndale High School, showed the reserve grand champion steer at the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo over the weekend. Patin has been showing steers and heifers since he was nine years old and is a member of the Milam County 4-H, where he participates in livestock judging. He is also active in sports at THS. He is the son of Tammy and Jimmy Patin.
Every year during in-service, our staff discusses building relationships. We talk about the importance of students being able to connect to their school and how that affects their willingness to be there and work hard.
As I wrap up this year’s Black History segment on Health and Wellness, I thought about the numerous topics that could be beneficial to not only black Americans, but the public in general. We all face challenges with health care and remaining well, although disparities in care are apparent and much more prevalent in communities with people of color. Contributors to increased morbidity in black Americans, people of color, and financially insecure populations include lack of adequate care, lack of cultural understanding by health care providers, lack of trust for the medical professions, push by insurance companies to “manage” care for patients, and the lack of understanding regarding medical conditions or treatment compliance.
