This week’s article begins the last few health and wellness features for the 2022 Black History Month series on Black Health and Wellness. This segment, “Rockdale Trailblazers,” features citizens who followed a path that improved the environment or services for others as a result of their journey.

Eighth-grader Destinee Bluford was the winner of this year’s Rockdale Earth Day Poster Contest. This annual contest is open to eighth graders under the tutelage of Lani Young, RJH art teacher. Shown here are (L-R) Rockdale Earth Day chairman David Melton, art teacher Young, Bluford with her winning poster and Milam County Judge Steve Young. Melton and the judge each spoke briefly to the 22 students who entered the contest about the importance of Earth Day and the creativity of the artists. Bluford won a $25 gift certificate donated by Corona’s Mexican Restaurant.

The Republican Women of Milam County (RWMC) held their annual Independence Dinner and Program on Friday night at 6 p.m. at the Milam County Youth Expo Building in Cameron. About 250 were present for the speakers, auction and a prime rib dinner from Kostroun Catering.
