Betty Joyce Dockall Guthrie

Betty Joyce Dockall Guthrie, a couple of weeks away from her 92 birthday, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, in Odessa.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 17 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral home in Rockdale with Pastor Patrick Welton officiating.

The family will receive visitors an hour prior to services. Please join us in celebrating the life of Betty Guthrie and remembering the joy and love she brought to all that knew her.

She was born on Feb. 24, 1932, in rural Rockdale to Walter and Bertha Dockall.

Betty was a dedicated homemaker. She enjoyed working in and showing off her garden and immaculate yard. It was truly a beautiful site to see. A trait she passed along to her daughters, as they both enjoy gardening as well.

She was also very particular about her choice of ice cream, and requested only Blue Bell vanilla ice cream.

In her younger years, you could catch her dancing around the house to the music of Tom Jones.

She never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune and also loved watching the Dallas Cowboys.

Christmas was important to her. She made sure to send out Christmas cards each year to everyone she knew. And she had a large pencil cactus that lived for decades, that she joyfully decorated each Christmas.

She stayed active by going to the mall and joining a group of mall walkers for several years, becoming friends and conversing with many people who worked at various stores around the mall.

She also loved cooking Sunday dinner for her family. For many years, it was tradition to gather at her house and eat together every Sunday. The running joke amongst the family was to cover your plate with your hands when she walked by once you were full, so that you weren’t overserved with more mashed potatoes or another dinner roll.

She had great pride for her hometown. She kept in touch diligently with her hometown area friends. She subscribed to The Rockdale Reporter up until the month of her passing. She also donated each year to the Bushdale Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter F. Dockall and Bertha (Drescher) Dockall; husband of 58 years, Weldon “Wink” Guthrie; her sister, Berenice Dockall Eastwood; her brothers, Walter Dockall Jr. and Jimmy Dockall; and grandson Christopher Garcia.

Betty is survived by her three children, son Brian Guthrie and wife Natalie Guthrie of Fulshear, daughter Sharon Moya and husband Joe Moya of Odessa, daughter Debbie Guthrie of Tyler.

She was also a cherished grandmother to her two granddaughters, Erika Brechler and husband Matt Brechler of Galveston and Elizabeth Guthrie and husband Nathan Roe of Odessa.

She had two great-grandsons that she loved dearly, Michael Karr III and Samuel Roe of Odessa.

She is also survived by two siblings: her sister, Shirley Lindsey of Georgetown; and her brother, William Dockall of Rockdale; also, many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews, and even great-grandnieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

The family would like to extend our extreme gratitude to her nurses and aides of Hospice of Midland, and the staff at Courtyards, who helped her during her time with them.
