Bruening
Melba “Nanny” Bruening, 91, of Rockdale peacefully went with the Lord Wednesday June 8, 2022, at the Rockdale Estates.
Services were held Saturday, June 11, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Minister Glenn Redmond officiating. Burial was at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale.
Mrs. Bruening was born Feb. 3, 1931, in Hallettsville to Irvin D. and Lorene “Granny” Norsworthey.
She married Curtis “Poppa” Bruening in Fayette County on Nov. 10, 1949. They lived in Columbus, Laurel (Mississippi) and La Grange, before settling in Rockdale in 1969. Melba and Curtis quickly became members of Murray Street Church of Christ, where they remained active throughout their lives. Mrs. Bruening enjoyed her time with the Ladies Bible Class Group.
She was always busy with her home life and raising her children, along with getting her GED in 1976.
Mrs. Bruening canned anything she could and loved to make homemade jellies. She was an outstanding cook, known for her Sunday dinners that included chicken fried steak, meringue pies, and “oh so good” dewberry cobbler.
She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother and a devoted Christian wife. Mrs. Bruening was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis “Poppa” Bruening; a granddaughter, Jaime Randall; her parents, I.D. and Lorene; two brothers, Vernard “Cowboy” and Jesse Norsworthey; and two sisters, Mary Drescher and Velma Wethington.
Survivors are a daughter, Becky Bruening Randall of Rockdale; two sons, Irvin C. Bruening and wife Karen of Crockett, Ron L. Bruening and wife Kimi of Topeka, Kansas; five grandchildren, Justin D. Bruening of Seguin, NIck J. Randall and wife Lindsey of Cedar Creek, Kelsey L. Randall of Bastrop, Austin J. Bruening and wife Erin of Topeka, Kansas, Clayton L. Bruening and wife Chelsea of Topeka, Kansas; and seven great-grandchildren, Brody Luke and Olivia Bruening, Lawson and Nolan Randall, Jasper, Grace Lynn and Nolan Everett Bruening; also, numerous nieces and nephews, many friends, church brothers and sisters and other acquaintances.
Pallbearers were Nick Randall, Justin Bruening, Andrew Norsworthey, Marty Norsworthey, Buster Drescher and Les Norsworthey.
Honorary pallbearer was Kelsey Randall.
