Mitchel
Buford P. Mitchel, 90, of Rockdale died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019, at Renaissance Villa in Rockdale.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.
Mr. Mitchel was born in Melvin on Oct. 30, 1929, to Robert and Ruth (Pierce) Mitchel.
He worked as a plumber’s helper until he was drafted into the Army in 1951. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
On May 30, 1952, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Howard in Brady.
Mr. Mitchel was hired by the president of Winn’s Variety Store (who was a personal friend) in 1955 to work in Austin. In 1957, he moved to Rockdale to manage the downtown Winn’s and then the one in the shopping center.
Mr. Mitchel was an active member of the Lions Club and Murray Street Church of Christ.
He was transferred to Corpus Christi in 1980. He retired and moved to Brady in 1981.
In 1993, he managed Motts Variety Store in Lampasas until 1996 and moved to San Angelo.
Mr. Mitchel enjoyed playing 42 and regular dominoes, also traveling with Angelo Roadrunners RV group.
The Mitchels moved back to Rockdale to be closer to family and friends in 2005.
His favorite thing to do was going to his place at Dime Box.
Mr. Mitchel was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ruth Mitchel; four brothers, Ralph, Basil, Calvin and Forest Pete Mitchel; two sisters, Christine Mitchel and Janie Garner; two half-brothers, Leslie and Cecil Mitchel; and a half-sister, Eva Shefield.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Mitchel of Rockdale; a son, David Mitchel and wife Janene of Dallas; and a daughter, Cynthia Mitchel of Elgin.
