Mitchell

David Wayne Mitchell was born Dec. 16, 1957, in Taylor to the parentage of Alvin David Mitchell and Janie Mae Allen Mitchell.

He passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, 2022, at the Temple Living Center East Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Temple.

David was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Thorndale, where he was baptized at an early age.

David grew up in Thorndale and graduated from Thorndale High School. He participated in sports and various organizations while in school.

After high school, David entered the workforce. He later joined the U.S. Navy. He received several awards and commendations while in the military. He traveled across the world during his enlistment. David got out of the military in 1989, after serving six years.

He met and married Gerberta Blakely on July 26, 1980, in Taylor.

David was very popular among his friends. He was nicknamed “Cat-Leg.” He was very outgoing and spoken. He enjoyed being around his family and friends, especially his nephews and nieces, whom he loved dearly.

He lived in South Carolina for several years until returning back home to Thorndale.

David will be truly missed.

David was preceded in death by both of his parents, Alvin D. Mitchell and Janie M. A. Mitchell; two sisters, Janie Odell Beck and Dorothy Ann Wellington; and one brother, Michael Mitchell.

He leaves to cherish his memory one son, David Theodore Mitchell; two sisters, Kathleen Harris of Austin and Janie House of Rockdale; four brothers, Alvin James Mitchell and wife Ruby of Austin, Floyd Lee Mitchell of Cameron, Ronald Dewayne Mitchell and Mark Mitchell of Thorndale; and a host of relatives and friends.
