Summers

DENTON—A memorial service for Richard Burton “Dickie” Summers, 72, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at Denton Bible Church, 2300 E. University Dr.

It will be followed by a fellowship from 2 to 4 p.m.

Mr. Summers was a Rock-dale native and a 1964 graduate of Rockdale High School.

An outstanding athlete at RHS, he quarterbacked the 1962 Tiger team to the state final football game.

He set passing records for career and single season which lasted 45 and 49 years respectively.

After graduation he went to the University of Texas on a baseball scholarship and played on a Longhorn team which placed fourth in the college world series and was later drafted by the New York Mets.

Mr. Summers had a highly successful coaching career, specializing in strength and conditioning.

He is a member of the Rockdale Athletic Hall of Honor.

Survivors include his wife, Rockdale native Gail Thompson Summers, and their two sons.
