The present met the past Friday when the City of Rockdale performed sewer main repairs in the 400 block of West Bell in front of what is arguably the most historic home in town. The three-story house was the home of H. C. Meyer, mayor of Rockdale in the early part of the 20th Century. The house was the site of the first locally-generated news photo in The Reporter—the first World War I draft call—in 1917. It also served as a haven for neighbors fleeing their homes in the 1936 Ham Branch Flood.
Milam County Judge Steve Young has recently included in some of his daily updates of the county’s COVID-19 numbers a warning for residents not to see the continuing avalanche of numbers as “just numbers” and not feel the human toll behind them.
